1522226 Controlling light INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 31 March 1976 [29 May 1975] 12974/76 Heading G2F A device for temporarily recording and displaying an incident optical image comprises a layer of material which photoionizes in response to the image light and hence beams imagewise conductive, electrodes being disposed either side of the layer for subsequently applying a current to reversibly oxidize or reduce the material imagewise to a coloured state. On cessation of the current, the coloured state will bleach over a few minutes, bleaching being accelerated if the polarity of the current is reversed. With particular materials image writing or erasure is not possible if both electrodes are the same since colouration and bleaching occur simultaneously at respective electrodes, and dissimilar electrodes, e.g. In 2 O 3 and Al, or a polymer layer containing a redox material over one of an otherwise similar pair of electrodes, are employed. The polymer may be nylon or a sulphorated polystyrene and the redox compound may be ZnCl 2 , Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , Cd(NO 3 ) 2 or Zn(NO 3 ) 2 . The photoionizable material may be a pyrazoline of the Formula: where n is 0 or 1 and A, A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>2</SP> are aryl; or a spiropyran; or a redox polymeric material such as poly (3-vinyl-10-methyl phenothiazine), with a solvent such as acetonitride, tetrahydrofuran or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. An activator, e.g. a polyhalogenated compound such as CCl 4 or CHCl 3 (others are specified), may be provided, or the solvent may behave as an activator. Claims (2) [1] The recording medium 1 is made of a photo-ionized, electrochemical painted material containing a solvent and an activator obtained as a result of redox reactions. The latter is made in the form of triaryl pyrazoline. When the recording medium is affected by the light distribution in it, the corresponding is formed: a latent image, which is heated to be visible when potential differences are applied to the conductive films 2 by means of a polarity switch b.
